Why New Years Resolutions Fail
01.22.2026

This week on the Full Disclosure Podcast, it’s time for “What Grinds My Gears,” when Jim and Alayna vent their frustrations. Up for discussion: New Years Resolutions, why they fail, and whether snow is a good thing or a bad thing.

Why Resolutions Fail

Many of us have experienced arriving at a new year and making goals with the best intentions of growing as people and accomplishing new things. So why do we fail so often?

Well, the nature of New Years Resolutions is pass/fail, typically, meaning that anything short of the outcome you imagined before embarking on the process can’t possibly count as success. There’s no room to adapt the goal, imagine new outcomes, and—heaven forbid—actually learn from the process of growth and pivot in real time.

Also, so many goals are secretly (or not-so-secretly) rooted in dislike of oneself. “I want to fix x or y about me,” we think, and we make goals accordingly. Goals founded in a desire to change who we are rarely work, and the negativity we bring to this isn’t exactly the stuff of sustainable motivation.

In the world of business, especially mortgage tech, it’s important to set goals that are reliable and sustainable, based on measurable deliverables, and subject to change along the way.
